Statement

The creative medium I find myself most interested in—the one I’ve proven most preoccupied with—is cinema. Whether crafting handmade films with a team of trusted collaborators, writing stories of narrative velocities orbiting the vacuum between text and image or analyzing the cinematic output of individuals, groups and cultures—and endeavoring to explore such ideas in an academic setting, the possibilities and limitations of the medium continue to fascinate me.

In addition to mobilizing personal projects and working amorphously in film production as well as contributing to non-profit art & cultural organizations, the intertwined livelihoods of teaching and learning have proven highly supportive of this concentration, and that’s something I’d like to continue. Thematically I’m concerned with family, memory, stasis and equilibrium. Stylistically, I’m interested in duration, tempered peace and balanced chaos, but perhaps most evident throughout the work: an application of traditional patterns with experimental variables. In terms of academics and research, I focus on the cinema that has developed in Japan, and—connecting to previous comments regarding thematic and stylistic concerns—adaptive representational tendencies I see across indigenous and naturalized art forms and traditions in Japanese culture.

On this site one will find a somewhat complete database of my creative and professional work in various media (long and short films, essays, fiction, installations, photos), often presenting excerpts, documentation, or promotional material from projects, occasionally offering full digital copies of the works themselves. For press contacts or other interested parties, please visit the connect section of the site to open communication or request online screeners and additional samples.

Enjoy, and please give the artifacts you discover here whatever time you deem appropriate.
